Video and access events
Reviewing access events alongside video
An access log explains the system’s decision. Video may show what happened around that decision. Reviewing them together helps investigate an incident without asking either record to prove more than it can.

The decision
Start with a specific event
Identify the entrance, approximate time and reported issue. Find the relevant access event, then review the available footage from the camera covering that entrance. Lexoh Security Center brings configured events and connected video into an operational view.
The useful question is concrete: did the door open, did another person follow, or was the reader unreachable? Avoid searching broadly through people’s movements without a defined purpose.
Establish the limits of each record
An accepted credential shows that the system authorized that credential under its rules. It does not prove who presented it. A door command does not prove the door moved; a position signal, where installed, adds another piece of evidence.
Video can provide context but may miss the relevant action because of framing, obstruction, lighting or a recording gap. Preserve uncertainty in the incident account instead of filling it with assumptions.
On a narrow screen, scroll the table horizontally to see every column.
| Record | What to verify | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Credential decision | Access point, identifier, decision and time | Does not identify the person holding the credential |
| Open command | Target device and recorded command | Does not prove physical movement |
| Position signal | Sensor mapping and state transition | Only available with installed, configured monitoring |
| Video recording | Camera, interval and visible activity | Framing and gaps may leave the event unresolved |
Commission the association
Confirm which camera covers each access point, whether the clocks agree and whether recording is available for the required period. Trigger a known event and retrieve the corresponding footage.
Test both successful and refused access. Also check a period when the camera is disconnected. An access event can exist without video, and recording can exist without an associated access event.
Control review and export
Define who may view live images, retrieve recordings and export an incident. These permissions can differ from the right to administer credentials. Agree on retention and incident-preservation procedures with the organization’s privacy lead.
Keep the review focused on the relevant interval and record why material was preserved or shared. The Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec’s video-surveillance guidance is a useful reference for necessity, access and retention planning.
Questions
Practical questions
What if the event time and video time do not match?
Check the configured time zone, clock synchronization and any known offset before comparing records. Preserve the original timestamps and document the discrepancy. Ask the installer to correct the configuration and repeat a known test event; do not silently change the incident timeline to make the records agree.
Does connecting a camera also provide recorded playback?
Not necessarily. Confirm the supported recording source, permissions, retention and retrieval workflow. Request a demonstration with the proposed camera and recorder. A live image or a camera association does not by itself establish that an older recording can be retrieved or exported.
Does every access event have a video clip?
No. That depends on camera coverage, recording availability and the configured association.
Does an accepted credential identify the person on camera?
It identifies the credential used. Establishing the person’s identity requires additional evidence and an appropriate review process.
