Marina access control

Marina access control through the boating season

A marina can have several access policies on the same property. Member parking, boat launching, dock entry and contractor access should be defined separately even when they share administration.

The decision

Create a zone and season plan

List the areas each user group needs and when. A berth holder, visiting boater, service technician and winter-storage customer may have different permissions.

The same person can hold several rights. Define which record owns each one so ending a summer parking permit does not accidentally remove an approved winter-yard visit.

Lexoh’s marina solution can connect configured permissions and entrance equipment. Confirm the required links between records and any external marina software rather than assuming they exist automatically.

Renew membership without preserving stale access

Before the season, confirm contact details, vehicles, credentials and the zones covered by the renewed agreement. Retire replaced credentials and remove rights that no longer apply.

A renewal should be a deliberate review, not simply an extension of every permission from last year. Assign responsibility for late renewals and temporary vehicle changes.

Treat the ramp and docks as distinct entrances

The ramp may require a launch product or accepted wash proof. Dock access may follow berth membership or an escorted-visitor procedure. A parking permission alone should not establish either right.

At vehicle entrances, assess trailer turning and waiting space. At pedestrian access points, review the route, hardware and approved emergency arrangements. Choose credentials that the installed readers can actually accept.

On a narrow screen, scroll the table horizontally to see every column.

ZoneRight to defineChange or exception to test
Member parking Vehicle and parking entitlement Renewal, changed vehicle and expired permit
Dock entrance Berth or approved visitor right Guest expiry and closed-season restriction
Launch ramp Launch permission and accepted proof when required Trailer return and destination-specific proof
Service/storage yard Work order or approved appointment Contractor end date and retained winter visit

Make service and guest access manageable

Define who sponsors a guest and who authorizes a contractor. Limit the intended zones and period, then provide directions and assistance information. Avoid using a berth number as an uncontrolled shared credential.

Prepare for haul-out and winter storage

Haul-out can change traffic direction, working areas and the type of vehicles arriving. Agree on temporary operating arrangements with staff before the busy period.

After the season, expire summer rights and verify the permissions retained for yard access or maintenance. Test the defined network and power interruption procedures. An unattended winter gate still needs a named contact and maintained equipment.

Questions

Practical questions

Can a marina keep its existing gates and readers?

Have the installer assess equipment condition, control interfaces, credentials, power and exposure at each entrance. Record what can be reused and what needs replacement. A working vehicle barrier does not establish that a pedestrian dock gate or its reader is compatible with the same arrangement.

What should be tested before seasonal reopening?

Test a renewed member, an expired credential, a guest and an approved service visit at the relevant entrances. Verify allowed and refused access, expiration, the approved exit path and assistance. Include the agreed network/power interruption procedure and confirm staff can find the current service contacts.

Does marina membership include launch access?

Only if the membership policy grants it. Define parking, ramp, dock and wash requirements separately.

Can the same credential serve several zones?

If the readers are compatible and each permission is configured. One credential does not require identical rights everywhere.
