Park entrance
Automating a park entrance: passes, payments and peak arrivals
A park entrance may verify a pass, sell admission or direct a visitor to reception. Decide which tasks belong in the vehicle lane before selecting a kiosk or barrier.

The decision
Keep admission and capacity distinct
An admission right may establish eligibility to enter without reserving a parking space or an activity. Define the relationship between passes, bookings and any capacity limit.
Visitors need clear instructions when a valid pass is not enough for their planned visit. Put those instructions before the queue where possible, with a safe route for vehicles that cannot proceed.
Separate quick validation from longer transactions
Returning pass holders may need only a compatible credential check. First-time visitors may need product selection, payment or staff guidance. Estimate the proportion of each and where a longer interaction can take place.
A kiosk does not eliminate transaction time. Review queue storage, turning movements, cyclists and pedestrians. Test the flow with representative vehicles rather than only walking through the screens indoors.
On a narrow screen, scroll the table horizontally to see every column.
| Arrival | Check to define | Exception to rehearse |
|---|---|---|
| Existing pass | Credential, validity and destination | Expired or unreadable pass |
| Admission purchase | Product, price and payment result | Failed or cancelled payment |
| Reserved activity | Booking and arrival conditions | Wrong day or missing reservation |
| Assisted arrival | Reason for referral and responder | No answer or local intervention needed |
Specify the visitor-facing equipment
Choose the required scanner, reader, payment terminal, printing and assistance functions. Confirm reach, screen visibility, language and operation under the site’s environmental conditions.
Lexoh’s documented Sépaq Mont-Mégantic project provides an installation reference for an outdoor kiosk and controlled entrance. Its presence does not establish every pass or booking workflow proposed for another park; those need their own scope.
Plan unstaffed hours explicitly
Name the team handling failed passes, payment questions and late arrivals. Define which requests can be resolved remotely and when a local intervention is necessary.
Test calls from the entrance and confirm the information available to the responder. Camera context depends on connected equipment; an intercom does not automatically include video or a view of the booking system.
Test interruptions and seasonal changes
Document what the selected controller can do locally and what requires connectivity. Do not assume new kiosk sales or card payments continue through an internet outage. Test power-loss behaviour separately.
Before seasonal opening, verify rates, pass dates, call routing and equipment condition. Review peak-day exceptions and queue observations with staff to decide whether the lane, instructions or reception process needs adjustment.
Questions
Practical questions
Can visitors arrive without a smartphone?
Plan an accepted alternative, such as a printed credential, compatible card or staff-assisted arrival. Specify where visitors obtain it, how the reader handles it and where help is available. Test the complete journey with the selected equipment; a QR-only mobile screen is not a complete alternative.
What information is needed to size the entrance project?
Provide the entrance plan, vehicle types, busiest arrival intervals, expected mix of pass checks and purchases, and capacity rules. Include existing equipment, power/network availability and assistance hours. Observe transaction and exception times before agreeing on lane capacity; a device specification alone does not predict the queue.
Can every pass holder use the same entrance flow?
Only if the admission rules and credential compatibility support it. Booked activities and capacity restrictions may require separate checks.
Does entrance automation replace reception?
It can handle defined transactions and validation. Information, exceptions and physical site work still need assigned staff.
